Listen, I admit that I was very absent from the political discussion this time around. Over the summer I had a pretty tough time, medically speaking (You Are Only 39, Are You Sure You Had a Stroke), and so it was by design that I kind of buried my head in the sand and stayed AWAY from the 2014 election coverage. We vote by absentee ballot… I was able to stay away from it almost completely.
Then this morning, social media was very in my face about the whole thing. Half of my newsfeed is celebrating, half are devastated… and I love many people on both sides of the coin. It reminded me that, even though I am a registered Republican who votes along party lines, there is ONE message that I do want to share, now that we are done with elections for a while. Well… done for a hot second, we all know that won’t last long.
Here we go…
You have gained some political ground, and as a registered Republican it makes me happy… but it also gives me cause for great concern. Look, I can’t vote Democrat, I just can’t. For me, there are too many issues that are pretty high on the priority list for this country that I just have to side with the Republican party on. (Oh, please… I am not going to list them here. I already know what kind of backlash this post will receive, let’s not add fuel to the bon-fire.)
BUT… and please hear me on this. You only have one more shot at this leadership thing. That is it. There are many of us who are registered as Republicans but are hanging on to the party by a thread, simply because another option is not currently viable in our terrible two-party system.
Here are the things I expect you to do this time around:
I expect you to work with others, yes even when they are being stubborn children as well. We are paying you a whole lot of money and giving you a lot of power… figure it out! Stop making excuses. Just. Do. It.
I expect you to put your religion to the side, and allow others to live their lives according to their own religious or moral beliefs. I will stand by your right to worship however you choose all day, every day… but I expect you to stop inserting your religion into our political climate. Yes, I realize that your religion is important to you and it dictates your own moral compass… but it should not be allowed to dictate the compass of anyone else.
I expect you to stay out of my bedroom. I am a straight female who has been married to my husband for over 15 years. And you know what? No one cares. And here is a newsflash: Our country overwhelmingly supports the rights of the LGBT community to marry whoever they choose… you are not going to change our minds. More than ever, the majority of folks DO NOT CARE who someone loves and wants to spend their life with. This one issue alone is going to cause you to lose your party, and I want to ask you if it is worth it. The ONLY people who can destroy the sanctity of a marriage are the two people who have said “I Do”.
I expect you to put your country before the needs of your party. Could I give this lecture to Democrats? Absolutely. But I am not a registered Democrat. I am part of this party so I am lecturing YOU. We are all sick and tired of politicians who refuse to make tough decisions because they are afraid of how it will play out in the polls. Listen to your constituents, yes. But also do the right thing. You KNOW we are spending too much money. You KNOW we are in multiple wars. You KNOW immigration is a problem. Make some tough decisions (yes even if it means you don’t get everything you want) and take action.
I expect you to get with the times. The reality is we live in a social media culture. We live in a world where celebrities have influence. We may all loathe that reality… but we are not going to turn back the clocks and go back to a time where that was not the case. We need leaders who can relate to young people. We need leaders who can read the pulse of the nation and make that pulse work in our favor. The Democratic party is winning this fight, and it shows in the polls, every single election. No this doesn’t mean that you all have to hang with the Kardashians, or wear skinny jeans to the office. But it does mean we should be paying more attention to the world around us. We need to realize that times have changed. We either evolve, or become extinct.
You have one more chance. If you blow it this time? I will lead the charge to make sure the Republican party is never in power again… and I think there are many who will join me. We are sick and tired of politics as usual. I truly believe in some very core principles adopted by the Republican party… but it is time let go of the things that are holding us back from really making a positive impact on this country.
We are counting on you…
Many Kind Regards,
Erin
